Tank cars have their own regulation. After franticly searching through the "Official Railway Equipment Register" and yelling "where is this damn tank car!" when I was looking the first time for the information about a tank car, I discovered that, yes, tank car have their own regulation and are not part of the "regular" Railway Register".

We all remember the Mont-Megantic tragedy in the Province of Quebec!. Tank car have now, a very bad reputation. Yet, petroleum traffic is growing in North America and we see more and more "oil trains" (trains that only have tank cars) on the tracks.

I have found, online, a copy of the "Field guide to tank cars". As usual, to respect copyrights, in Google, search for "field guide to tank cars" and you will be able to download it.

Everything is explain about the "DOT" numbers.

Lots of information is available directly on the tank car from the stencil table at the right end of the car (see picture) and at the "A" and "B" end of the car, where the capacity (volumes) are clearly display! (see picture!)

Les wagons citernes ont leurs propres régulations. J'ai découvert ce fait, un jour, quand j'essayais de trouver les informations d'un wagon citerne dans le " Official Railway Equipment Register " et qu'en panique, j'hurlais " Ou sont ces damnés wagons citerne la dedans!!!! ". Oui, les wagons citernes possèdent leurs propres règles et ne font pas part du " Official Railway Equipment Register ".

Tous, nous nous souvenons de la tragédie du Mont Mégantic au Québec! Les wagons citernes ont une très mauvaise réputation présentement. Et pourtant, le trafiqué pétrolier augmente sans cesse en Amérique du Nord, nous voyons de plus en plus de " trains d'huile " sur les rails (trains composé uniquement de wagons citerne).

J'ai trouvé, en ligne, une copie du " Field guide to tank cars ". Comme a mon habitude, par souci du respect des copyrights, je vous suggère de mettre " "field guide to tank cars " sur une recherche Google pour trouver ce document et le télécharger (en anglais).

Tout y est expliqué sur les codifications " DOT ".

Beaucoup d'informations sur les wagons citernes sont disponible directement sur ceux-ci. À la fin du wagon, sur le côté, une table des détails du wagon est affichée sur un stencil (voir photo). Au bout du wagon, les capacités de la citerne (volumes) sont aussi affichées (voir photo).
